News: Here A Tori, There A Tori - List Edition! (September 10, 2008)

Posted by woj on Thursday, September 11, 2008 | Minutiae

[Here-a-Tori, There-a-Tori is an occasional column rounding up small Tori mentions far and wide.]

In this episode, we list a number of recent Top Whatever lists on which Tori or her work have appeared:

    • Entertainment Weekly’s readers pick their Top 20 Worst Covers
    • Yahoo Music’s 25 Best Singer-Songwriters Currently Working
    • WYEP’s Top 100 Songs from the 90’s
    • Out Magazine’s 100 Greatest, Gayest Albums

Entertainment Weekly asked their PopWatch readers to which cover songs were the worst of all time and Tori’s version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” — somewhat inexplicably we think — rounded out the list, placing 20th in EW’s Maim That Tune feature. Thank you Adrian and jennifer c.

On the other hand, Rabih pointed out that Yahoo Music’s Rob O’Connor feels Tori is one of the best 25 active songwriters, placing her 24th and adding:

She lost the Kate Bush routine years ago and has since become one of the weirdest piano playing concept-album recording chanteuses in the business. I think she’s been improving over the years, or I’m learning how to listen, which is apparently in a large chair with fluffy pillows, a lyric sheet and headphones. From there, it’s like a trip to the other side.

Pittsburgh radio station WYEP polled their listeners for their 10 favorite songs from the 1990s. The results were compiled into WYEP’s Top 100 Songs of The 90s which became the playlist for the station on this past Labor Day (September 1st for those outside the States). Three of Tori’s songs made the list: “Cornflake Girl” (#45), “Crucify” (#62) and “Silent All These Years” (#74). Thanks to Kim for the tip!

Finally, Out magazine turned to a who’s who of gay and gay-friendly artists and critics to compile a list of the 100 greatest and gayest albums of all-time. As with WYEP, top 10 lists from all participants were tallied to produce one list which was posted on their website this week. Little Earthquakes came in at #54, with this little quip from Perez Hilton, who put it in the #2 spot on his personal list:

A song has the ability to convey so many emotions, and that’s exactly what this exquisite album does. It takes you on a very powerful journey.

Many of the other personal lists have been posted on Out’s Popography blog though Perez’s is the only one which has included any of Tori’s work so far.

Thanks to Chris, Adrian, Adam and Erica for letting us know about this!
