OK… I have been coming to this site ever since its inception as ‘A Dent…’ and this is the first time I have written on a tour page. I’ve been to every single Tori show in Sydney (except for one of the 3 nights she did back at The Seymour Centre in November 1992). These tour pages have really been such a highlight for me over the years and i know i am not going to do the show justice as it’s all really a blur right now…
It was an honour seeing Tori with the SSO. There were countless moments of real beauty. Hearing her play these songs with a full orchestra was really like a dream. Did this show really just happen?
I was in a box seat overlooking the entire stage. I think you’ll be hard pressed to find any footage of the show on youtube as there were printed notes on all the seats of the boxes asking us not to film the show. And i noticed the ushers remind a few people of that throughout the evening…
Stuff you may want to know? It really was perfection except maybe halfway thru Girl Disappearing Tori stopped as she had stuffed up. She did a cute ‘I fucked up in Sydney… this always happens to me… i am so sorry to the people on stage with me’ improv and then started again. The rest of the show was flawless.
Highlights for me were Winter, Hey Jupiter, and a heart-achingly beautiful version of 1000 Oceans.
I’m sure others will write in and fill in gaps that i have left. But she was in fine voice – as good as i’ve ever heard her…
3 more shows for me after tonight. Needless to say I. CANNOT. WAIT.
Fingers crossed for the M&G tomorrow!

Nothing can really prepare you for how rich these songs sound with a live orchestra. There were many heavenly moments where I just wanted the sound to wash over me. The speed was generally fast and flowing. Maybe California, for example, seemed MUCH faster than the studio version. Personal highlights… There were a heck of a lot, but I’d have to say that Hey Jupiter and Anastasia were both fantastic conclusions to the two halves of the show.

WOW! I have seen all of Tori’s Sydney shows over the years but have never been as moved as I was last night, the rich, lush, emotive, powerful sound of Tori’s voice with the Sydney Symphony was ETHEREAL, it was like going to another plain. Opening with ‘Baker Baker’ this version flawed me, it was just beautiful.
Another highlight was of course ‘Silent all these years’ which never fails to move but soooo amazing with live strings.
‘Yes Anastasia’ before the encore was so powerful and charged, she is such a force.
So glad I get to go again tonight as I was so overwhelmed last night I need to be sure I didn’t dream it.

This is my third Tori show and the first for the Opera House.
Was happy to hear “hey Jupiter” and “Yes Anastasia” was definitely the highlight of the night for me.Tough ive been waiting for Precious things and she came through!
I didnt know about the not filming warning….ops i filmed the entire encore and Tori waving to us before leaving.
I was hoping she would come out the stage door after the show, but instead she left with mark and tash, and gave us a huge smile and wave as they were driven off. Looking foward to the brissy show and hoping for a meet and greet there.

The Sydney Opera House is just spectacular. Whatever I see there either inside or out is amazing. Never get tired of looking at the old girl either on our magnificent harbour.
Then. Tori plays and takes it to a whole other level. AND with the SSO! So so spoilt! This was my 6th Tori show at the Opera House and my 40th since 2005.
It’s hard to describe just how wonderfully these arrangements come to life with a full orchestra. Opening with Baker Baker was a nice choice – the opening strings are amazing. It is interesting to see how much more controlled Tori is in keeping with the conductor and the players (having seen her solo, with the quartet in 2011 in the US and with the normal band). Her stuff up in Girl Disappearing was very cute. They just started again of course. The rest – flawless.
The keyboard only songs were a nice surprise (thinking that there would be separate SSO and just Tori Sets) so it was good the solo songs were mixed throughout. They also seemed to inhabit a different place to when they would otherwise be played solo and were drawn out longer than usual as well. I never get tired of any way in which Crucify comes out to play. Purple People was also lovely.
Jupiter was similar also to the quartet 2011 version and I’m glad Tori decided to keep doing a few non reworked Gold Dust songs in the orchestra setting. The day to day/cupboards bit was very powerful. It had an interesting percussive sound at the start (probably someone actually drumming by hand?!) that was amplified.
Now. The big bits of course were on show for Edge, Anastasia and Precious. Wow wow wow! Absolutely on fire. Tori really let loose on these when all the instruments and players were doing their thing. Just amazing how well she works with so many people. Thoroughly enjoyable. Congrats to Tori and the wonderful SSO.
I also have not done a lot of reviews on here since 2007 but never miss anything thanks to the wonderful undented folks – thanks for all your effort in supporting EWF.
