It was wonderful and special show. Tori said before leaving the stage after the main set that they had been nervous, but thanked the audience for making it easier for them. They were many tuning brakes and Tori said that is what you have to do with real instruments. She seemed little unsure what to do while the quartet was tuning and during one tuning session she did funny improvisation about tuning and how it would be sad song if they didn’t tune.

Highlights for me were Shattering Sea, Marianne, Sister Janet and Cruel. Tori said Cruel was request from Helsinki and that she had asked John Philip Shenale to arrange it for the quartet for the Helsinki show. It was very well done and definite highlight. Cloud on my tongue sounded also better in my opinion with quartet, because it was played in faster tempo than how she usually does it solo. Sound was really good, at least where I was sitting (close to mixing table). Sound of piano and strings were powerful and Tori’s piano playing was in top form. Her singing was beautiful although she didn’t sing always the high notes.

The lights during Star Whisperer and Winter were somewhat annoying. There was a very bright spot from the stage behing Tori to audience and you couldn’t basically see the stage during those songs.

    2. Petri Wessman says:

Fantastic concert last night, easily the best Tori show I’ve seen (only the 3rd, though, so take that with a grain of salt :) and in general the best gig in a good long while. She’s performing with just a string quartet as backup — no drums, no guitars, no nothing else. This resulted in a somewhat unusual (and great) setlist, with tons of songs from my favorite albums as new variant versions. I especially loved the parts where the string quartet did things I’m pretty sure you’re not suppposed to do with a string quartet; for example, standing in for drums + synths on “Cruel” (awesome version). Tori was in great form, and the whole set seemed designed to appeal to long-term fans. I think it was somewhat divisive; people in general seemed to love it, but I did see an unusual number of people leave before the end of the show… maybe this was a bit too weird for people expecting to hear a stream of her hit songs. Dunno. I absolutely loved it, even more than I expected to.

    3. Matt and Char says:

What can be said….no words do it justice. Despite our preconceived notions about opening at a hockey arena we witnessed pure majic. The star of the show hands down was Cruel. The entire night and tone of the show was set with Shattering Sea….it was tight …crisp…Suede as well… She is tight with the quartet…Her voice amzingly strong. People you got to find a way to get there live.
