‘Midwinter Graces’
TORI AMOS
By NATE CHINEN
This high priestess of introspection addresses the season through a personal haze, wringing original music from the carols of her childhood. Gorgeously recorded and impeccably produced, “Midwinter Graces” includes some characteristic stunners, like “Star of Wonder,” inspired by the three kings from the east, and “Holly, Ivy and Rose,” with a dramatic Celtic lilt. The album also dwells in hymn-like serenity and diaphanous wonder, with only a few glaringly awkward moments, like “Pink and Glitter,” a big band number that feels neither deft nor genuine. Throughout Ms. Amos shows herself to be right at home with the trappings of nativity, up to and including the frankincense. (Universal Republic; CD/DVD; $19.90)
