News: El Mundo Interview (September 21, 2012)

Friday afternoon, Tori visited the offices of Spanish newspaper El Mundo to do an online interview where she fielded questions submitted by readers on their website. She responded to a total of eight questions and, unsurprisingly, the first query was about when she would come to play a concert in Spain. Her response will please many on the Iberian peninsula as she said, after focusing on The Light Princess in 2013, she is hoping to come to Spain in 2014, when touring in support of her next album. Good news indeed!

1. Querida Tori: Felicidades y gracias por 20 intensos años de emoción impagables. 2. Querida Tori: Felicidades por “Gold Dust” y gracias por 20 años de maravillosa música y sentimientos. He pasado mucho tiempo obsesionado con tu canción “Yes, Anastasia” (mi favorita de tu repertorio y la que más me emociona), intentando descubrir los significados ocultos en su historia. Ahora que tengo la oportunidad para dirigirme a ti directamente, esta es mi pregunta: ¿Sobre qué estás cantando realmente en esa canción? ¿Crees que la trama o el mensaje han ido cambiando de algún modo a lo largo de todos estos años? Un abrazo.

Esencialmente sí. Va sobre una mujer joven teniendo que enfrentarse a una situación traumática. El punto de partida original se refiere a la figura histórica de Anastasia, pero diría que con el paso de los años ha ido a definir una situación traumática para cualquier mujer de cualquier lugar, cualquier edad. Es un reto. La canción por sí misma está tratando de alcanzar cualquier mujer, dando una fuerza que no se ve en el mensaje. Puedes imaginarte que la canción está alcanzando a cualquier alma de mujer, encontrando la guerrera dentro del alma de esa mujer, agitándola para tener la valentía de enfrentarse a su capturador, aún siendo invisible. El capturador puede ser la vergüenza, los mensajes negativos que escucha dentro de su cabeza o puede ser una persona real.

3. ¿Cuál es la canción del nuevo disco que considera que más ha cambiado en estos 20 años de carrera?

Más de una ha cambiado y evolucionado en estos años. Pero hablaré primero de ‘Winter’. Fue inspirada mirando retrospectivamente a cuando era una niña. Veía cómo una mujer cuya autoestima se había visto dañada, había recibido un puñetazo, después de un fracaso de un disco que se llamaba Y Kant Tori read, cuando digo fracaso me refiero a fracaso comercial, así estaba tratando de evocar una porción de mí que tenía sueños, a los 5 años. A los 20 perdí esos sueños. La imagen de esa niña corriendo en la nieve, que caminó a través de los campos, compartió un momento positivo con su padre. Otra imagen que inspiró esa canción era la de una niña que se cayó de un columpio y fue ayudada por su abuelo. Ayudó a que el dolor se fuese. Mientras tocaba esto con la orquesta el director Jules Buckley estaba dando el ritmo y permitiéndome a mí que tirase y empujase contra la orquesta empecé a ver otras imagenes en mi marco. Y sin pensarlo las musas me mostraron otra imagen de una niña, pero no era yo, era Tash, mi hija, que se había caído en el hielo en Viena cuando tenía dos años y Mark, Tash y yo estábamos solos y la nieve estaba cayendo. Antes de alcanzarla, la recogí del hielo. Ella abrazó a su padre y él le ayudó a que las lágrimas se fuesen. Me dí cuenta tocando la canción que podía tener tanto corazón sin que fuese siendo la niña. Esa película continúa, la puedo ver. Eso ocurre con todas las canciones.

4. Bienvenida a España Tori, un placer tenerte en casa. Qué piensas y qué conoces de nuestro país? Un fan de tu generación.

Estoy aprendiendo sobre España. Creo que porque en EEUU el español es un idioma que está alrededor de ti cuando estás en Florida del Sur. El idioma es como un perfume y te atrae. Es romántico. Y la música y el baile han sido siempre fascinantes para mí. Creo que la manera en que yo me había abierto a España en el pasado había sido a través del flamenco y el arte. El siguiente paso es sobre la gente, conocer a España a través de su gente.

5. Querida Tori: Eres una compositora muy prolífica, pero imagino que habrás tenido crisis creativas. ¿Qué haces en los momentos de bloqueo? ¡Un abrazo!

Con el paso de los años he llegado a aprender que hay unas cuantas técnicas que puedes aplicar cuando sientes esa parada. Puedes hacer una peregrinación a un lugar específico, algún lugar que decides que puedes visitar durante una semana o dos, yo hice eso con el Sur Oeste en EEUU. Y he hecho otros peregrinajes a lugares específicos para captar el paisaje y romper mi rutina. Otra opción es viajar a lugares lejanos, exponerte a otras culturas. No siempre tienes que crear una relación destructiva con el fin de escribir. Amigos míos crean conflicto en su vida personal con el fin de sentir algo con lo que escribir. Creo que al estar abierto a historias de otras personas puedes ganar una percepción diferente a la que tenías. Yo miro alrededor, escucho lo que está pasando. On line también puedes hacerlo, a través de blogs y redes sociales, sin salir del sitio que estás. Pero creo que si no puedes viajar por razones ecónomicas puedes romper tu rutina yendo a lugares de tu ciudad que no conozcas. Descubir sitios nuevos. El escritor debe ser autónomo. Yo no escribo desde la posición de hija, hermana, tía, madre, esposa. Escribo como un músico. Debes sacarle punta a tu lápiz y no tener miedo a la belleza.

6. Cuando está triste, ¿qué música prefiere escuchar?

Depende del momento y del tipo de tristeza. La tristeza es una bendición para un artista. No puedes mantenerte solo en la tristeza. Hay momentos en los que me puedo permitir el lujo de quedarme dentro de esa tristeza y explorarla y hay veces que tengo que salir. A veces la dejo marinando y accedo cuando puedo para explorarla. Estando triste, hay momentos en que escucho reggae y hay momentos en que escucho música para ballet.

7. Después de tantos años en el mundo de la música, ¿que es lo que te motiva para seguir en ella? ¿que cosas te inspiran hoy? ¿compones de la misma manera?

A mí me inspiran mis propias experiencias, pero también me inspiran las historias que me cuentan otras personas. La gente cuando me para en una cafetería o en un aeropuerto y me cuentan cómo perciben una canción me ayuda a ver aspectos nuevos de esa canción. Entonces oigo una nueva canción que se está gestando en mi mente y vuelve a ocurrir ese proceso. Cada persona se pasa el testigo, se crea un efecto dominó.

8. Después de ‘Gold Dust’, ¿qué será lo próximo?

Llevo cinco años trabajando sobre el proyecto de un musical con el teatro musical británico. Esperamos que esté listo en 2013. Tenemos una última prueba. Y espero tener listo un nuevo disco en 2014.

3. What is the song from the new album that finds that more has changed in the 20 years of career?

More than one has changed and evolved over the years. But I will speak first of ‘Winter’. It was inspired by looking back to when I was a kid. 5. Dear Tori: You’re a very prolific songwriter, but I imagine you’ve had creative crises. What do you do in times of lock? A hug!

Over the years I have come to learn that there are a few techniques that you can apply when you feel that stop. You can make a pilgrimage to a specific place, somewhere that you can choose to visit for a week or two, I did that in the U.S. Southwest. And I have made pilgrimages to other specific locations to capture the landscape and break my routine. Another option is to travel to distant places, exposing yourself to other cultures. Not always have to create a destructive relationship to writing. My friends create conflict in their personal lives in order to feel something you write. I think being open to other people’s stories can win a different perception to the one you had. I look around, hear what’s going on. On line you can do it through blogs and social networks, without leaving the site you’re. But I think if you can not travel for economic reasons can break your routine of going to places you do not know your city. DISCOVER new sites. The writer must be autonomous. I do not write from the position of daughter, sister, aunt, mother, wife. I write as a musician. You sharpen your pencil and not be afraid to beauty.

6. When you are sad, what music you prefer to listen?

It depends on the time and type of sadness. Sadness is a blessing for an artist. You can not stay alone in sadness. There are times when I can not afford to stay within that sadness and explore and there are times I have to leave. Sometimes I leave when I can marinate and agree to explore. Being sad, there are times when I listen to reggae and there are times when I listen to music for ballet.

7. After so many years in the world of music, what is it that motivates you to stay in it? What things inspire you today? Do you compose in the same way?

To me inspire my own experiences, but also inspire me the stories I have others. When people stop me in a coffee shop or an airport and tell me how they perceive a song helps me see new aspects of that song. Then I hear a new song that is brewing in my mind and that process happens again. Each person passed the witness, it creates a domino effect.

8. Following ‘Gold Dust’, what’s next?

I have five years working on a musical project with British musical theater. We hope to be ready in 2013. We have one last test. And I hope to have ready a new album in 2014.
