Bgirl says:
Gorgeous show! Her voice was absolute perfection: crystal clear, powerful, sultry, soaring, playful. The songs I enjoyed most (for surprise, intensity and lighting) were: Icicle, Never Seen Blue, iieeee, and Talula.
Peeping Tommi was strange & amazing. The Lizard Lounge was a huge treat; very electronic/plugged feel. She said she’d never done “We Float” before, but that “we love this woman, she’s a good woman.” I loved “Heart-Shaped Box”, she seemed to have a lot of fun with it.
This was my 10th time seeing Tori in concert; it definitely ranks among the top 3. Stunning music.
Lorraine Eakin says:
Wow. I said Atlanta was epic, and I meant it – but Durham was too. Aside from all the surprises (remember when T used to promise surprises and then play, like, Cloud on My Tongue or something?), my overall impression of this show was that it was filled with red songs of conflict. This was a no apologies show.
The great thing about the thread of a Tori show is that there’s always room for us to bring what we will to it. The first set felt very political. Was she thinking about Michael Brown? James Foley? Just doing requests people asked for? Well, it doesn’t matter what Tori was thinking or if she’s making intentional connections. I was thinking about the James Foley tragedy, so that’s what I saw interwoven through Pancake, Past the Mission, and Blood Roses. I will also note that Peeping Tommi, Oysters, and Virginia were inspired together.
Lizard Lounge. Holy crap. I am sure – SURE – that people have probably been bugging her all summer to cover some PJ Harvey, so it was awesome to be there when it finally happened. She could have done Landslide after that, BUT SHE DIDN’T. She did Heart Shaped Box, which is beyond inspired – this was genius.
Cooling, Mrs. Jesus, Never Seen Blue – all awesome. Tear in Your Hand was a good crowd pleaser. But when she started the improv about “her soul was born just miles from here, she’s with me now…” etc. etc. and then said the magic words, “glitter girl” – well, I’m embarrassed to admit that my jaw literally dropped open. I haven’t seen Talula since 2001, back when Tori couldn’t remember if Henry said two or three. So this was awesome. When she sang “your little fig newton” she sang “newton, Newton Carolina” – which is of course where she was born. Very special version! So where do you go from there? To Gold Dust. That set was hard to beat.
Samantha says:
This was my 5th Tori show and the best. She really brought it for this tour and this set list was incredible, the Lizard Lounge especially. Icicle was my favorite, and no song disappointed. Just incredible!
AT says:
Agree with Bgirl above as for highlights; particularly Icicle. The smoke and lights on that song were absolutely nailed. I loved the Talula improvs connected to her birthplace in North Carolina. Show #15ish since 1996, but very memorable. Some classics, some rarities, some new. Enjoyed Wedding Day as we just picked up our marriage license earlier that same day. Not a huge fan of the backing track on Cornflake Girl. It seems to mute the piano, but all good.
Jessica R. says:
My husband and I drove down from Virginia to see Tori perform in Durham. The setlist was lovely, as was the sound quality. This was our 5th Tori show, and it’s a top 3 performance for me. Loved the opening act as well!
My only complaint, and this isn’t necessarily directed at fans, is people who call themselves “reporters” leaving their cell phones on the brightest setting during the show. Kills the mood for those of us that paid for seats are enjoying Tori perform.
