Sydney Morning Herald Interview (November 13, 2009)

    Friday, November 13, 2009 | 03:48 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I do think some people excel at making happy little catchy tunes and then there are writers that are strong when they’re going after multi-levelled subjects and subjects that are hard to talk about – and that’s kind of where I’m most comfortable, in talking about the uncomfortable.

Tori was interviewed for the Sydney Morning Herald by Dan Kaufman. They primarily discussed Abnormally Attracted to Sin: its themes and inspirations with a nod to song-writing in general.

Thanks to orfeo and Shane for catching this one!

This interview was also reprinted on Stuff.co.nz.

New York Magazine Interview (November 11, 2009)

    Friday, November 13, 2009 | 03:37 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

Of all the music that my dad turned me on to, the Christmas carols are what I related to a lot more than any religious music that the Methodists were pushing.

This short interview regarding the genesis of Midwinter Graces appeared on New York Magazine’s culture blog Vulture on November 11th.

Thanks to Dina, Ingrid and Mark-Alexis for bringing it to our attention!

Southern Star Interview (November 4, 2009)

    Tuesday, November 10, 2009 | 05:00 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

[The media] want what I won’t give them, so I reject them on that front — and everybody gets seduced by rejection. I don’t mean for them to get seduced, because I wish they would get distracted and talk about something else.

Lest we forget in the Midwinter Graces release hub-bub, the Australian leg of the Sinful Attraction tour kicks off in Melbourne on Thursday. Promoting the tour, Tori spoke to Melbourne’s Southern Star, a weekly newspaper for the local gay and lesbian community, and the interview, which focuses on Abnormally Attracted to Sin and Tori’s relationship to the music industry and the public eye, was posted on their website on November 4th.

Between the Lines Interview (November 5, 2009)

    Saturday, November 07, 2009 | 16:52 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

There’s a side to the record when you listen to it that talks about what is the gold – what really is that? It’s valuing whom you have in your life, the relationships you’ve built. It’s not just about success – or it just isn’t all your material possessions anymore – it’s how you live your life, and that’s all included in the music.

Chris Azzopardi’s interview with Tori in which she talks at length about Midwinter Graces (which we had a teaser from last month) was published in the November 5th edition of “Between the Lines” and is now available online at PrideSource.

Thanks to Mark-Alexis Gabriel for the link!

    Scotsman Interview (October 31, 2009)

    Monday, November 02, 2009 | 03:07 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

Our ancestors have been celebrating midwinter for thousands of years, whether Norse or Native American. The Christians just happen to hold the copyright on it now. We should all be able to enjoy the rebirth of the sun. And that’s s-u-n.

Chitra Ramaswamy spoke to Tori about Midwinter Graces for The Scotsman and the interview was published in the October 31st edition of that newspaper. Besides the upcoming seasonal record, they also discussed Tori’s relationship with Cornwall, her Cherokee roots and family.

Virgin Music Interview (October 30, 2009)

    Monday, November 02, 2009 | 02:54 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

When you say commercialised I think of people identifying that you can only have a good time if you spend a lot of money. That’s a negative because lots of people don’t have lots of money to spend. I tried to make a record that didn’t focus on that side of it, but focused on values and people.

This interview by Greg Rose appeared on Virgin Music’s website on October 30th. It focuses primarily on Midwinter Graces but also touches on the creative process and staying out of the public eye.

Thanks to Ben for the tip!

Daily Telegraph Interview (October 23, 2009)

    Tuesday, October 27, 2009 | 04:26 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

Those issues have been around for thousands of years. The Catholic Church hasn’t told women they can have birth control. The Muslim world hasn’t turned around and said, ‘Hey girls, go find your independence’. If we’re honest there is a big old war still happening.

Noel Mengel of The Daily Telegraph in Australia talked to Tori in preparation for her upcoming Australian tour and the interview was published in last Friday’s edition of the newspaper (as well as on news.com.au and reprinted in the Herald Sun). In addition to discussing Abnormally Attracted to Sin, they touch upon religion, spirituality and tolerance.

    Veronica Interview (September 5-11, 2009)

    Tuesday, September 15, 2009 | 03:38 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

[Painter Paul] Gauguin had had it with Christian society where everything revolved around man. Which is why he traveled to a place where women were in charge. I also write my lyrics while traveling. From my estate in Cornwall they’d only be about tractors and farmers.

This interview appeared in the Dutch TV magazine Veronica and was kindly translated to English by our very own Ruud — many thanks to him! As Ruud says, “Apart from the misspelled album title everywhere, grammar errors and typos are mine,” though I think I’ve caught all the misspellings at least.

The original article in Dutch may very well be on Veronica’s website but their site is misbehaving at the moment so we can’t check for sure.

The Quietus Interview (September 10, 2009)

    Tuesday, September 15, 2009 | 03:13 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

People are not interested in growing with an artist either, even if they stay for an album or two they’re usually on to the next new person. That’s a very different way of looking at well . . . art. For me, whether it was visual artists or novelists or songwriters, I’d always want to know what those people that I respected were thinking and saying.

Tori’s take on the attention span of the average music fan is one of several topics touched upon in this interview for The Quietus. She and interviewer Mark Eglinton also cover living in England, the music industry and Tori’s relationship with it, religion, “Raining Blood,” and the forthcoming Solstice album, slated for release in November.

Thanks to David for the heads-up!
