Eda reports that she picked up copies of Abnormally Addicted to Sin at Rhino Records in California and received a lithograph — pictured to the right — along with her purchase. While there have been promotions like this for some of Tori’s previous records (as recently as American Doll Posse where independent record stores were giving away a lithograph with copies of that album) this is the first we’ve heard of such an offer for Abnormally Attracted to Sin. If anyone else comes across this lithograph deal, please let us know, as we’re sure everyone would like to know if it was something that Rhino Records did on their own or if there is another nationwide promotion in place.
Kevin O’Hare reviewed Abnormally Attracted to Sin in his latest Playback column for western Massachusetts’ The Republican newspaper. He gives the album 2½ stars but doesn’t really say much about it beyond declaring the music stale and hoisting the lazy Kate Bush comparison.
Mike S pointed out that Abnormally Attracted to Sin was one of the Evening Standard’s CDs of the week, where it was given three stars and a favorable, if short, write-up by Mike Pearson.
Abnormally Attracted to Sin was less-than-favorably reviewed in the May 18th issue of Rolling Stone, garnering only 2½ stars. While it hasn’t been posted on their website yet, Parker kindly sent us a scan which we’ve transcribed below.
Update The review is now on RollingStone.com.
I wanted to look at how you can uncover what you believe in as a spiritual, sexual creature. You don’t need the approval of your family, or of their religion. You can think, ‘Wait a minute, I’m a spiritual being. Just because I like gold handcuffs doesn’t mean I’m not a spiritual being.’
Alan sent us a link to this interview with Tori that appeared in the May 14th edition of this Irish newspaper. In it, the usual topics of power and sex and spirituality, but they also discuss living in England and Ireland as well as her Dad’s latest pursuit: poetry!
The Times’ Dan Cairns takes Tori to task for Abnormally Attracted to Sin, giving it 2 out of 5 stars in a short but pointed review.
Thom Jurek reviewed Abnormally Attracted to Sin for Allmusic, giving it 3 out of 5 stars. While he enjoys much of the record, he offers the usual criticism: that it’s simply too long.
Melissa Maerz has given Abnormally Attracted to Sin a grade of B in her review for Entertainment Weekly. It’s a short one, so no cut for you. Thanks to Michael and Aaron for picking up on it.
Abnormally Attracted to Sin (2009) – Tori Amos
By Melissa Maerz
What would Jesus do? As Tori Amos sees it, probably something dirty. Exploring themes of religious and carnal power on Abnormally Attracted to Sin, she’s heavy-breathing about blood and wine and saints and getting down on her knees (for non-saintly reasons), likely setting the librarians in some university’s human-sexuality archives all atwitter. Sometimes her brains get a little too big for her Bible: On ‘‘Mary Jane,’‘ she fails to find a rhyme for ‘‘tetrahydrocannabinol pure isomer dronabinol.’‘ But when she’s banging on her piano over layers of lush electronics, she’s got the rapture part down. I said to [Doug Morris] ‘I’ll give you golden eggs — but let the goose fly. Don’t start getting me in a fucking pot of boiling water. I’m going to go mad’. And he laughed.
Velvet points us to Ireland’s Independent which published this short interview piece with Tori yesterday. In it, they discuss the genesis of the new record, the new joint venture with Universal Republic, the women behind “Ophelia,” and Ireland. Someone call Jim Edward’s and get us a table too!
Belgian website De Redactie has posted a nifty little video interview. The article text is in Dutch but the video is captioned so you can hear Tori’s answers without peeling back an over-dub.
Thanks to shug for the link!
