Virgin Music Interview (October 30, 2009)

    Monday, November 02, 2009 | 02:54 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

When you say commercialised I think of people identifying that you can only have a good time if you spend a lot of money. That’s a negative because lots of people don’t have lots of money to spend. I tried to make a record that didn’t focus on that side of it, but focused on values and people.

This interview by Greg Rose appeared on Virgin Music’s website on October 30th. It focuses primarily on Midwinter Graces but also touches on the creative process and staying out of the public eye.

Thanks to Ben for the tip!

Daily Telegraph Interview (October 23, 2009)

    Tuesday, October 27, 2009 | 04:26 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

Those issues have been around for thousands of years. The Catholic Church hasn’t told women they can have birth control. The Muslim world hasn’t turned around and said, ‘Hey girls, go find your independence’. If we’re honest there is a big old war still happening.

Noel Mengel of The Daily Telegraph in Australia talked to Tori in preparation for her upcoming Australian tour and the interview was published in last Friday’s edition of the newspaper (as well as on news.com.au and reprinted in the Herald Sun). In addition to discussing Abnormally Attracted to Sin, they touch upon religion, spirituality and tolerance.

    Sunday, October 11, 2009 | 17:50 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

In preparation for Midwinter Graces promo, Chris Azzopardi from Between the Lines talked to Tori about the upcoming holiday record last week. The full article will be out early next month but a few questions from the interview have been posted on Pridesource.com.

    Veronica Interview (September 5-11, 2009)

    Tuesday, September 15, 2009 | 04:38 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

[Painter Paul] Gauguin had had it with Christian society where everything revolved around man. Which is why he traveled to a place where women were in charge. I also write my lyrics while traveling. From my estate in Cornwall they’d only be about tractors and farmers.

This interview appeared in the Dutch TV magazine Veronica and was kindly translated to English by our very own Ruud — many thanks to him! As Ruud says, “Apart from the misspelled album title everywhere, grammar errors and typos are mine,” though I think I’ve caught all the misspellings at least.

The original article in Dutch may very well be on Veronica’s website but their site is misbehaving at the moment so we can’t check for sure.

The Quietus Interview (September 10, 2009)

    Tuesday, September 15, 2009 | 04:13 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

People are not interested in growing with an artist either, even if they stay for an album or two they’re usually on to the next new person. That’s a very different way of looking at well . . . art. For me, whether it was visual artists or novelists or songwriters, I’d always want to know what those people that I respected were thinking and saying.

Tori’s take on the attention span of the average music fan is one of several topics touched upon in this interview for The Quietus. She and interviewer Mark Eglinton also cover living in England, the music industry and Tori’s relationship with it, religion, “Raining Blood,” and the forthcoming Solstice album, slated for release in November.

Thanks to David for the heads-up!

Birmingham Mail Interview (August 28, 2009)

    Wednesday, September 09, 2009 | 00:39 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I love playing live. To me, being on stage is just the most magical place a musician can be. You don’t get the same rush in the studio. You don’t get to start again if you make a mistake.

So says Tori in a brief interview that appeared in the August 28th edition of the Birmingham Mail, prior to last night’s show at the Symphony Hall. Hopefully it got more than a few people to come out the concert as well.

Between The Lines Article (August 6, 2009)

    Thursday, August 13, 2009 | 00:05 UTC | Posted by Violet | Articles

I have challenges in my life just like anybody else, but I like being able to be a full-time musician and a mom and being able to get out there and do a pretty strong show for two hours – and not have to dance topless at some bar because I’m confused.

In this article, from PrideSource.com’s newspaper Between The Lines, Tori talks about the upcoming Christmas album, the gay community, and suicide, among other things. Thanks to Robert Beard for sending this in.

    Buzzine Interview (July 2009)

    Monday, August 03, 2009 | 11:59 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I think doing interviews is really tricky. There’s an art form to it, and I understand why it’s done, but I really like listening to people a lot more than I like talking. I wrote songs so I wouldn’t have to talk about myself, but I end up answering questions all the time.

A few weeks ago, Buzzine posted a set of photographs taken at (or possibly before) the Los Angeles show. Later, photographer Lauren Elfman also got the chance to talk Tori and Buzzine posted the interview at the end of last week. In this wide-ranging exchange, Tori discusses spirituality, the Sinful Attraction tour, family, The Light Princess, the upcoming Christmas/Solstice record and her thoughts on Comic Book Tattoo.

Thanks to Mark-Alexis for the link!

Miami New Times Interview (July 21, 2009)

    Wednesday, July 22, 2009 | 03:04 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I discovered [Cindy Sherman’s] work, I think, 20 years ago and I began to think about how artwork in the music industry is usually just about glamorizing celebrities instead of telling a story. And so I’ve tried to work with photographers who were more geared up to that kind of vision.

John Hood spoke with Tori for a piece that appeared in the July 21st edition of the the Miami New Times previewing the upcoming concert at the Filmore Miami Beach. While the piece is almost more rumination than interview, they discussed cover songs, Cornwall, her house in Florida, art and photography — after he confessed his sins.

    Popdose Interview (July 15, 2009)

    Monday, July 20, 2009 | 01:05 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

When you’re a grownup, as you know, sometimes you get stuck and trapped in thinking like a grownup all the time and following grownup rules. We have to be responsible and disciplined. Even when you’re an artist, you do work within rules, a structure. So, Tash sometimes shows me another way of building structure, just in her stories and playtime.

Tori was interviewed by Katherine Hoffert for the pop culture website Popdose. The lengthy piece covers everything from the inspiration and evolution of the new album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, to photographer Karen Collins to touring with an 8-year-old daughter on the bus. Tori also drops the tidbit that the song “That Guy” might be included in “The Light Princess” musical (apparently, she also mentioned this in an interview on KPRI in San Diego, though we haven’t been able to track down details of that appearance).
