Globe And Mail Interview (December 5, 2001)

    Wednesday, December 07, 2011 | 00:51 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

When I left the Peabody, I turned my back on all kinds of things, including the idea of classical music. I think I had a projection of what it was, that it was very closed to any other forms of music.

    J. D. Considine’s article in the December 5th edition of The Globe and Mail starts like many other Night of Hunters pieces, discussing Tori’s early experience at the Peabody, but then delves deep into the process of creating Night of Hunters to the exclusion of nearly every other topic.

In it, Tori drops details about why she gravitated to Irish mythology to form the foundation of the song-cycle, the amount of work researching its sources and addresses in some depth the choice of Alkan’s Song of the Madwoman on the Sea-Shore, Prelude Op. 31, No. 8 to be the basis for “Shattering Sea.” A nice contrast to some other recent press.

Tell Us More, NPR, Tell Us More

    Wednesday, December 07, 2011 | 00:47 UTC | Posted by woj | TV/Radio/Web

As we reported over the weekend, Tori did a taping for the NPR program Tell Me More on Monday, December 5th. So, far NPR has yet tell anyone when it will be broadcast, but they did share this photograph of Tori performing in their studio on Instagram.

According to @towanda74, who was at the taping, Tori played “Nautical Twilight,” “Edge of the Moon” and “Winter” and also spoke to host Michel Martin.

If you were at the taping and would care to share your tale of the afternoon, we’d love to hear it — drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll get it added to the site.

And as soon as we know when the session will air, we’ll pass the information along!

    Ryan says:

Was lucky enough to be at this performance. There were only about 30 people in the room seated. A grand piano (not one of Tori’s). Tori walked in, dressed in a flowy black top, green tights, and HIGH bright green Christian Loubouin heels. She looked gorgeous. Michele Martin the host started by apologizing that the piano wasn’t a Bosey, which Tori laughed at. She was asked some questions (fairly standard stuff)gave a nice story about how her daughter has very strong opinions and has a unique relationship with Tori’s father. She played Nautical Twilight, spoke with Michele some more, then Michele asked Tori to play another song from her new album and one from her catalog…Tori sang Edge of the Moon, and then said she would play a song that she gets many requests for, and played Winter. She sounded incredible and stayed around after to meet and greet with those fans lucky enough to be there. It was truly incredible.

    VH1 Mop-up

    Wednesday, December 07, 2011 | 00:47 UTC | Posted by woj | TV/Radio/Web

Following Tori’s appearance on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live last week, her outfit, from jacket to shoes, was profiled”:http://www.thefablife.com/2011-12-05/style-seen-tori-amos-shoes-probably-could-crucify-you/ by The Fab Life, a celebrity news & gossip website operated by MTV Networks. Thus, we learn she was wearing, “a Joseph faux snakeskin jacket over an All Saints blouse, Top Shop raspberry jeans and Marni pumps.” If that doesn’t mean anything to you, just look at the pretty pictures:

Also, as you may recall, Tori answered a question for VH1’s “Pass The Bowl” series. She also submitted one and we found out yesterday what she wrote: “Describe a spiritually erotic experience in detail.” Just what we guessed!

Listen to Sin Palabras Clips On Amazon

    Sunday, December 04, 2011 | 22:07 UTC | Posted by woj | Releases

Even though we’re all pretty familiar with the music on Night of Hunters, it is interesting to give it a listen without the vocal tracks and Amazon is now allowing you to do that via the samples they’ve added to their listing for Sin Palabras, the instrumental version of Night of Hunters. It’ll be released on December 13th so the wait to hear the full version won’t be much longer…

Thanks to mario for the tip!

All The Way To New York

    Sunday, December 04, 2011 | 17:42 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

Last night was the second concert of the Night of Hunters tour’s two-night stand at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Aside from the core anchor songs and “Leather,” the set was completely different from the previous evening’s, featuring “Spark,” “Winter,” and “Snow Cherries From France” with the quartet and solo performances of “Icicle,” “Josephine,” and a cover of U2’s “Running To Stand Still.”

The full setlist has been posted in the Tour section. As always, your reviews are welcome! If you’d like to share your thoughts on the performance, just use the comment form on the concert’s page.

Tonight’s a day-off but the tour picks up again on Monday in Washington.

Washington Blade Interview (December 1, 2011)

    Sunday, December 04, 2011 | 16:48 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I think to some degree, that isn’t really any of my business. People have their own relationships with the songs. What maybe gets confusing is when people start trying to read so much into the songs that they think that I’m leaving my husband and child and running off with somebody from the planet Saturn and joining a cult and that’s just not happening.

In the run-up to Monday’s show at DAR Constitution Hall, an interview by Joey DiGuglielmo appeared in the December 1st edition of The Washington Blade. Their conversation hit on some of the usual topics — how the Night of Hunters project came to be, the touring configuration to support the album — but also veered into a few areas that haven’t been at the forefront as much, such as Tori’s thoughts on fans, homosexuality and the practicality of impractical shoes (no, really!)

New York: A Toast In Your Honor

    Saturday, December 03, 2011 | 20:02 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

Last night was the first of two nights at New York’s Beacon Theatre. Sticking right to the printed setlist, Tori and the Quartett powered through a concert that featured “Fearlessness,” “Spring Haze,” “Siren,” “Precious Things,” a stunning solo performance of “Putting The Damage On” and, speaking s someone who was in the audience, a devastating run of album closers — “Twinkle, “Gold Dust” and “Toast” — that made up the second solo section of the show.

The full setlist has been posted in the Tour section, with thatnks to @tender_buttons and @vervalicious who co-tweeted from the show and we’ve already received several reviews and comments on the performance from folks in attendance. If yo’d like to add your opinion as well, we’d love to hear it! Just post it using the comment form (and be patient as we may not get new reviews moderated until later tonight or tomorrow).

The second show at the Beacon is tonight! Dropping the royal we for a second, I’ll be there taking it in from somewhere in the lower balcony. Assuming all works out, I’ll post the set from show on our Twitter feed so follow along if you’d like!

Finally, if you’re still dithering about coming tonight — or to any show on the tour for that matter — NBC New York is more than happy to help you make up your mind.

    Tori To Tell Us More

    Saturday, December 03, 2011 | 19:38 UTC | Posted by woj | TV/Radio/Web

As posted on the official Facebook page, Tori will be one of Michel Martin’s guests on an upcoming episode of the NPR program Tell Me More. Tori’s team will be giving away some tickets to the taping of the appearance, so if you will be in or around Washington, DC on Monday the 5th, send an e-mail to NPR@toriamos.com, providing your name, age, city and e-mail address to request a spot. (This was posted on Thursday afternoon so we’re guessing most spots may be gone by now, but give it a shot if you can attend!)

Since they say it’s a taping, we’re guessing the appearance probably will be broadcast on Monday but we’ll will be tuning in just in case. NPR has a listing by state of all radio stations that carry the program and the airtimes.

Once it is aired though, we all should be able to stream it from the show’s archives or listen via their podcast.

Thanks to Ryan for the tip!

Big Morning Buzz Live Welcomes Tori!

    Saturday, December 03, 2011 | 18:00 UTC | Posted by woj | TV/Radio/Web

Tori made a quick appearance on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live on Friday, December 2nd to chat with host Carrie Keegan.

Fortunately for those with day jobs and/or without DVRs, VH1 has posted video of the interview on their site.

After showing off her “crucifixion shoes,” Tori talked about producing and recording Night of Hunters, the presence of her daughter Natashya and niece Kelsey on the record, her hypothetical son, and, during the “Buzzer” section, reveals that the song she most wants to cover is Queen’s “Killer Queen!” Hmmm. Yeah, we can get behind that.

    Check out the interview below!

And, while we’re on the topic of VH1, Tori also got to Pass The Bowl, as part of their on-going interview series where celebrities contribute a question to their their bowl and then answer a question drawn at random from those previously submitted. Snagged from the VH1 Tumblr, here’s Tori’s question and answer:

Dane Cook: Describe the coolest moment of your life. Something that made you feel badass.

Tori Amos: [After asking the present VH1 staffers what made them feel badass.] For me, I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and my father had told me that “that devil music” was going to send me to hell. And so, his mother was a missionary and my dad was a minister – we weren’t allowed to listen to Jim Morrison and I was not allowed to go to a Led Zeppelin concert – never going to happen, no way. Because good Christian girls did not go and watch him move those hips. So, when I met him and he asked if I would sing with him, that was one of the most wonderful moments. I called my father and said “I am here, singing with the devil.”
