WFUV's Words and Music From Studio A To Feature Tori

    Tuesday, November 22, 2011 | 01:10 UTC | Posted by woj | TV/Radio/Web

Remember back before the tour started and these lovely photos of Tori gracing the WFUV studio surfaced on Flickr? Well, it seems that the interview and performance taped at the time will finally be airing on this New York City public radio station.

According to their upcoming listings, Tori will be the guest at 9:00 PM Eastern on Monday, November 28th for their Words and Music From Studio A series with deejay Darren DeVivo. Snippets from that hour-long appearance will also be aired at 7:40 AM and 4:45 PM Eastern during their Take Five segment (which is also available as a podcast).

Both programs will be available in the WFUV Archives for on-demand listening afterwards in case you happen to miss it.

Thanks to Mario for catching this in WFUV’s listings!

You Will Not Ever Be Forgotten By Me

    Friday, November 18, 2011 | 01:37 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

Tonight saw Tori’s brief but sweet tour of South Africa come to a close in Cape Town. Performing at GrandWest’s Grand Arena, she again treated the audience to a revue of her back catalog, highlighting songs such as “Icicle,” “Mother,” “Dragon,” “Concertina” and “Me And A Gun,” but she also included one song from Night of Hunters, concluding the main set with “Carry.” The show also featured a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus” to open the encore.

Thanks to the admirable efforts of @ChantelErfort and @ffreakazzoid, the concert unfolded on Twitter as it happened and the full setlist has been posted in the Tour section. A couple reviews were already sent in; if anyone else who had the pleasure of seeing the show would like to add their thoughts and opinions, please do using the comment form there!

So, a teary farewell to South Africa after an amazing swing through that country! The excitement and enthusiasm of the fans for these shows there has been really incredible to watch and infectious for those of us Tori will be visiting next when the Night of Hunters tour picks up again at the end of November in Atlanta. The Apollon Musagète Quartett will be rejoining her and the North American leg will continue through to just before Christmas.

Cape Argus Interview (November 13, 2011)

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 03:34 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

There is more than one [Bösendorfer] that I have a relationship with, but they all get along. We have to make decisions about which travel best because of changes in temperature and humidity. I’ve never played one I didn’t find magical and I can’t wait to meet yours.

Tori chatted with Evan Milton for the Cape Argus newspaper. While the article originally appeared in the Good Weekend section of the paper’s November 13th edition, that particular article does not appear to have made it to their website. Fortunately, it was reprinted in Tonight, which is where we’ve linked it from. The article addresses the South African tour, her plans for what those shows would be like, an explanation for the Apollon Musagète Quartett’s break from the tour and some interesting gossip about the pianos used on the tour.

Thanks again to Ben for the link to this interesting piece!

Cape Times Interview (November 14, 2011)

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 03:33 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I’ve never been able to simply pick a topic and write about it. I know of writers that watch others and write about what they see. I’m not good at doing that. I have to experience it first-hand. I must taste and feel it. If you don’t know the language of your subject, you simply cannot tell the tale.

Jason Curtis spoke to Tori for the Cape Times and his article appeared in the November 14th edition of that paper (as well as on Tonight, an online entertainment site run by the publishers of the Cape Times). In their discussion, they touch on her first visit to South Africa, Night of Hunters, her philosophy on playing live and her approach to song-writing.

Many thanks to Stoff for the tip!

The Times Interview (November 15, 2011)

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 03:33 UTC | Posted by woj | Articles

I never drink before shows. I drink Chinese tea and water. I also don’t eat for at least three hours before a show. This ensures that I’m entirely clear. I chew cinnamon gum before shows. This keeps my vocal cords wet, helping me to reach notes with lots of space to breathe.

In addition to publishing a review of the first concert in Johannesburg, The Times also ran a feature piees on Tor, focusing on her minimal rider requirements and fondness for wine. We certainly can’t fault either topic though it would have been nice to see a little more focus on the new record…and perhaps an slightly more outrageous quote to lead into this story!

Thanks to @ChantelErfort and Ben for the link!

The Times Concert Review (November 14, 2011)

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 03:33 UTC | Posted by woj | Reviews,Touring

Nikita Ramkissoon reviewed last Saturday’s Johannesburg concert for The Times. While the photographs included might not be quite as stunning as Reney Warrington’s shots, the review is no less glowing, calling Tori’s performance, “nothing short of genius.”

Johannesburg Concert Photos From Reney Warrington

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 03:32 UTC | Posted by woj | Reviews,Touring

While we normally don’t link to too much from the blogosphere, it is definitely worth noting Reney Warrington’s review of the third Johannesburg show due to the stunning photography included within.

Regardless of whether a press pass was involved or not, kudos to her for catching some great shots of Tori in, um, “flagrante piano.”

...And The Girl From The South

    Wednesday, November 16, 2011 | 01:29 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

Monday evening was the third and final show in Johannesburg and the third of four shows on Tori’s brief but welcome jaunt through South Africa. As with the other South African shows, it was a solo performance unaccompanied by the Apollon Musagète Quartett and, similar to the first two Johannesburg, consisted of material from the back catalog. The performance featured “Here. In My Head,” “Marianne,” “Rattlesnakes,” “Scarlet’s Walk,” “I Can’t See New York,” and “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The full setlist, thanks to help from @thatfoxyboy and the setlist archive on ToriAmos.com, has been posted in the Tour section.

Reviews of the concert are welcome! If you would like to post your thoughts about the performance, please do so using the comment form there.

Don’t forget: the final stop in South Africa is this Thursday, November 17th, in Cape Town!

Four In The Afternoon, The Midst of November

    Sunday, November 13, 2011 | 20:19 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

The second of Tori’s three concerts in Johannesburg is gone and past. Today’s performance was a matinee at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperor’s Palace and, aside from two songs, consisted of a completely different selection of songs from last night’s show. The set tonight featured “Northern Lad,” “The Beekeeper,” “Gold Dust,” “Lust,” “Toast,” “Beauty of Speed” and a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Famous Blue Raincoat.” Interestingly though, as with last night, no songs from Night of Hunters were performed.

The full setlist has been posted in the Tour section. Many thanks to @GoughPalmer for the live updates and pictures from the show and to @abmarkus for helping to put the pieces into place.

Reviews and media are welcome! If you’re inclined to share your thoughts on the concert, please feel free to do so using the comment form on the concert page!

Hey Johannesburg, Nothing's Been The Same

    Saturday, November 12, 2011 | 23:26 UTC | Posted by woj | Touring

Tonight marked Tori’s first performance in South Africa, starting a run of three shows at the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg. For this first show, which, as with the other South African stops on the tour was a solo performance unaccompanied by the Apollon Musagète Quartett, she focused entirely on her back catalog, playing nothing from Night of Hunters, featuring favorite b-sides such as “Black Swan” and “Honey” as well a now rare performance of “Me And A Gun.” The set also included “Blood Roses,” “Mother” and, for the second time, “Take To The Sky” with the “room in my heart” bridge from “Datura.”

Thanks to the Twitteriffic efforts of @RKGraeme, @strange_lil_boy and @LindiAtieno, we were able to update the concert in real time and have posted the full setlist in the Tour section of Undented.

We’d love to hear the thoughts and opinions of those who were there tonight — if you were and would like to share, please post a review using the comment form at the bottom of the page for the show!
